I could lie to you and say the beautiful orange shape in the upper right quadrant is a purposeful  mark honoring Halloween.  No, it just appeared and I allowed it to stay because I really like it.  A lot of things just happened in this painting.  That made it a lot of fun to work on.

I am happy….. and Happy Halloween, too!

I am really liking this painting.  Lights, darks, hard straight lines.  It has lots of things going on in it.  Pretty soon, I am going to have to decide which of the ones in this series are going to grow up and become large pieces.  I have the cradled panels out.  They are just waiting for me to make a decision.  Hmmm.

A couple of days ago, I joined Daily Paintworks.  I think I have most of the features figured out.  I am thrilled that my things are showing up in their daily email and on the website.  And people are looking at them!!!!  So, if you see anything you like in my blog, then DPW is a place to go to buy it using PayPal.  I haven't posted any of the ones done since October 19 because they are drying.  Very soon, they will be posted on DPW.  Or let me know, and I can post something to DPW for you to buy immediately.

So, please, go check out my gallery on Daily Paintworks.  I promise, the postings there will be growing.

I am happy…..

Lots of marks appeared today.  Cutting back into the underpainting revealed new things.  One line revealing numerous colors.  The things under the surface can be so exciting.

Adding white is really changing things.  I have to be careful to not lose the pure colors that I love so much.

Ok, I have made the decision to work more white into the color palette.  The first thing I noticed was just the different "feel" of the paint as I am applying it.  There is so much pigment in whites that there is a big change.  Different shapes and marks appear.  I say go with it for a while.  I wonder where this will take me.

I have been wondering how long I can use this palette of colors.  As of now, I have now answer.  Each day, I see new color combinations emerge.  Or even some simple shape that has not appeared before.  Same colors.  Same tools.  Different outcome.  I will continue.

Tiny little places in this painting really are a joy to me.  I am beginning to think that working with only oil paint is turning out to be a good thing in my development.

I am astounded at the difference a day can make with this color palette.  Turquoise Light over Chinese Orange makes a luscious avocado and really neutralizes the turquoise.

Today, I worked to neutralize the colors.  I wanted to quiet the painting.  I think it is a nice counterpoint to the others.

Oct 20 is another in the series that may be titled Little Jewels.  It is the same color palette I have been using for the last few weeks.  It has been interesting for me to see how many different paintings can emerge.  My biggest challenge has been to not just pick up a tube of another color that isn't in this limited group of 7 colors.  Today, I only used 4 of them.  That is amazing for me.

I am happy…..

Untitled October 19

Oil on Terra Skin
$50

I promise that I have not been eating bonbons since the 30 in 30 challenge was completed.  Hardly the case.  Since then, Joetta and I hung our show at KE Cellars and had the reception, which was a great success.  And now, I am contemplating things to come.

So, today's painting is even smaller than usual.  It is only oil paint.  No cold wax.  I have decided to work on unmounted TerraSkin for a while.  Even the 16 pt product buckles more than I like when cold wax is applied to it; so, for a while, I am going to use just oil paint.

When I worked in watercolors, the motto I was taught was "go big or go home."  So, I am still mulling over the smaller size for my abstracts.  Are they acorns that will want to grow?  Are they color studies?  Shape studies.  I don't know where they will go but...

I am happy…..

Slipping Below the Horizon

Slipping Below the Horizon
6"x6"
Oil and Cold Wax on Gessoed Watercolor paper
mounted on Ampersand panel
$95 Framed*

During the challenge, I was experimenting with potential color combinations.  I saw a tiny area in one of them that I cut out and saved.  That is the 1.25"x1.25" in the lower right corner of the above image.  It was such an interesting combination - Grumbacher Ultramarine Red, Sennelier Chinese Orange and White.  Are you surprised to not see any kind of purple?  Grumbacher Ultramarine Red is really made from PV15 pigment.  Crazy!  It is a lovely purple.  Not red.

So, today's post is my attempt to enlarge the tiny one.  Who knew that only 3 colors could make such a dynamic sunset.  I know we have all seen a sunset that just burns with orange and purple.  I love that last little sliver of sun as it slips below the horizon.

I am happy…..

Oil and Cold Wax on TerraSkin

$125 unframed
$145 framed

I think I did this the last time I did the 30 in 30 challenge….I imagine the paintings that were in process and didn't make the deadline as having their feelings hurt.  So, this one is New to the Group.  It is now happy to be included in a newly framed group that includes September 27, 29 and 30 paintings.  They are all going to the KE Cellars Winery exhibition next week.

September 2014 Collage of 30 Paintings in 30 Days

September 2014 Collage

Whoohoo!!  My 2nd time for 30 paintings in 30 days in 2014.  It sounds impossible have painted more than 60 paintings (yes, I have painted other things, too) this year.  Kathy tells me about the challenge and I just say ok.  And then the reality sets in.  We are the perfect pair to support each other through it.  Some may say it is the competition that keeps us going.  I really don't care what it is called.  We keep each other going to the finish line.  Thank you, Kathy.

On the technical side: I had set some goals when I started this challenge.  I just dug out my list that says I wanted to use more white and cream as neutrals.  I wanted to use stamping, circles, hard edged geometric patterns.  I may have hit some of them once in the 30 days. The goals ended up changing along the way because of the spontaneity that daily painting requires.  I am perfectly happy with that.

Things that I did.  Things I learned.
* I have always admired artists with an organic style.  I thrilled with my escapades in that direction.
* I used more purple.  I plan to continue doing that.  It can be a neutral.
* I used more orange.  I liked that and will continue it, too.
* I worked on TerraSkin and got better results.  It may become another surface choice for me.
* I discovered some color combination that I love.  They will definitely continue.
* I have to admit that there will always be some of what I call "odd man out" paintings when I do a 30 in 30 challenge.  There is nothing "wrong" with them.  They add variety to the group.
* I think this group of paintings is much bolder than the January group.  That group will always thrill me.  I think this group took my thought process to new place.

Now, I am wondering which ones of these will grow into larger pieces.

I am really happy…..
