Lightning is going to Kerrville, too.

Lightning
24"x24"
Oil and Cold Wax on Ampersand 2" cradled panel

Lightning is my second piece going to Kerrville for the Hot Wax/Cold Wax Exhibition.

Not often do I feel like my paintings are influenced by what is going on in my life but I was working on this piece when the tornadoes came through Garland and Rowlett.  I was actually watching them out the windows in my house.  It was an amazing thing to see and soon after that that suddenly I felt the need to put a jagged arcing pattern on this painting.  Was I influenced by the storms?  I don't really know that.  But I do know this painting is dramatic.  I hope you like it.

Doris is a former weaver who has moved her work into painting.  She will be discussing not only her application of weaving to her current work, but also how color impacts the planning and execution of her art.  She will be giving us a virtual tour of her work, and also will have some small pieces with her to display.  See her bio here in the newsletter.  Plan to come and bring a friend!

MAY MEETING - Doris Vasek in Color & Art
Artist’s Statement ---  Doris Vasek
My paintings are all about the color.
I started painting in watercolor in 2005.  It was the cleanness of their colors that attracted me.  It turned out to be an easy transition from hand dyeing my own yarn for weaving, fiber for spinning or fabric for quilting to my move to watercolors.  My paintings have always been representational.  No matter what I paint in watercolors, it is the color that first draws me to the image.
Flash forward to 2013 and see my interpretation of color into my oil and cold wax mixed media paintings.  They are not representational but once again, the intrigue of color has pulled me in this new direction.  The majority of colors in my paintings will probably never be repeated because of the methods I use in painting.  It is an additive, subtractive and manipulative method that creates unique colors each time. It is sort of alchemy.  It is still about the color.
Everyone will see something in these nonrepresentational paintings.  I hope you enjoy creating you own imaginative ideas about my oil and wax paintings.  Stop and see if you find little magical spots of color, too.

Welcome!

Dutch Art Gallery story continues

Ok, this is blatant self promotion but I get excited every time I see this on Dutch Art Gallery's home page.  They actually took one of my paintings and inserted it into a scene.  It looks so darn cute in that setting.

And along with that, DAG's Pursuit of the Southwest show is now over BUT they are keeping my paintings.  That is really exciting for me to be able to continue to display there.  So, they have 3 large oil and cold wax pieces plus a bunch of the smaller oil pieces.

If you are in the neighborhood, go by Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas!!  You will be amazed at the art.

This is a group of paintings that are going to The Gallery at Round Top in Round Top Texas.  The show hangs now through December.  Round Top is famous for the antique fair in the spring and fall but it is an all year long art escape.  If you are ever in central Texas you should go there.

In conjunction with the Christmas on the Square, the gallery has a Holiday Open House is on December 6.   Who knows…Santa may be strolling around there, too.

Growth #5 Delivered to her new forever home

Growth #5
30"x30"
Oil and Cold Wax on cradled panel
Sold

Growth #5 in her new forever home.

A dear collector of my art (let's call her BB) challenged me to enlarge Growth, the painting on the cover of 30 + Some.  BB had the spot in her dining room all picked out for it.  We measured and decided a 30x30 would be the perfect size.

I immediately ordered the panel.  I was committed. I was scared.  Could I do this?

I knew I had to do some experimenting to see if I could enlarge a 5x5 into a 30x30.  Now you understand why this is Growth #5.  There were a lot of incremental size increases and experiments with how to work the texture.  The only thing that remained constant through all 5 paintings was the color pallet.  Even with that constant, all of the paintings are really different.  This is part of the joy of working with no drawing.  Things just happen.  This is how a series of paintings happens.

So, yesterday, Growth #5 was installed at BB's and everyone is happy!

Every time I deliver a painting, it is an odd feeling, like having a friend move away.  Or my friend getting a new girlfriend.  Something like that.

Thank you, BB, for giving me this challenge and trusting me to paint something you would love enough to add to your wonderful collection.

Canyon Wall

Canyon Wall
36"x18"
Oil and Cold Wax on Panel
$950

I thought I would show something a little different today -  Canyon Wall hanging in my foyer.  This is my main location for "trying out" art.  The natural, indirect lighting is just perfect.  Plus, it is a great location in my house to view whatever is hanging from different angles, at different times of the day or just to catch a view out of the corner of my eye.  A lot of paintings have been tested here.  Some pass the test and others get more work.

Canyon Wall has passed the test!  Next week it will be going to the Rockwall Spring Membership Exhibition at The Harbor.
